Automated Transcription Failure

Although big players such as Google have waded into the transcription Industry with automated transcription - mainly in an attempt to find a way to  document and list the vast amounts of video and audio being posted to the net (i.e. google cannot “see” video and audio and has no way of determining the content). However recent independent testing of broadcast quality recordings shows many flaws – sometimes humorous transcription quality.

Thankfully Google is not the only layer in the automated end of the transcription industry. We really like Dragon Naturally Speaking Personal Dictation software and the Transcription Tool found in Adobe’s Creative Suite 4.  However, these packages are limited in use.

Dragon Naturally Speaking Audio Transcription

Dragon Naturally Speaking Transcription Software requires a “training” period where an individual records their speech then checks and corrects the outputted transcript. Gradually the software “learns” from mistakes, and after the training period, makes less and less mistakes when transcribing speech by the “trainer”. But, as you know, there are many situations when such training periods are unpractical. Dragon Naturally Speaking is not a viable option in one off interviews or focus groups, in meetings, or at any point when more than one person is speaking, and where that person has not been able to invest in the training period. Whew. That was a mouthful.

Adobe Audio Transcription Software

Adobe has an excellent package designed specially to help video editing, by providing a basic transcript that aligns with what is said in a video recording. However, once again this software is not designed with one-off interviews or focus groups in mind. Adobe Audio Transcription software aids in editing; it’s not meant to provide a detailed account of what has been said. The issues around Adobes Audio Transcriptionaccuracy has been commented on by various software testers. There is some consensus that there are some issues in the accuracy of transcription in groups of people in various non-studio controlled environments.
